The Importance of Skin Health

Believe it or not, your skin is the largest organ in your entire body. Like with every other organ, keeping your skin healthy is essential to your overall health. Your skin is your first line of defense against bacteria and viruses, produces vitamin D, and prevents dehydration. In this article, learn what to do to keep your skin healthy and why you should make proper skincare a priority.

General Skincare Tips

Most ways to take care of your skin are reasonably well-known and straightforward– put on sunscreen, wash your skin when you need to, drink lots of water, and disinfect any cuts or scrapes you get. In general, your best method of taking care of your skin is a healthy lifestyle. In this vein, some skincare tips are a bit more underrated. Getting adequate sleep, exercising daily, and keeping up a consistent skincare routine are all great ways to keep your skin looking (and feeling!) its best. These pieces of advice are great to keep in mind heading into not just taking care of your skin, but your body, mind and other organs as well.

Staying away from stressful situations, as well as drugs and alcohol, is another excellent way to keep your skin fresh and clean. Have you ever woken up with a hangover and a new breakout? Being dehydrated after just one night of drinking can cause acne, “tight” looking skin, and a flushed face. Long-term drinking can even lead to dilated blood vessels, which can cause dangerous and unsightly flushing in your skin. Reaching for a large cup of coffee the morning after a long night can do wonders for your skin– the caffeine will constrict your blood vessels, helping reduce redness. Lightly massaging your skin while putting on face creams or lotions is another excellent way to reduce redness and puffiness caused by alcohol.

In the event of a breakout, many people reach for the closest, harshest cleanser that they can find to rid their faces of any acne. But some lighter, more neutral remedies are even better for your skin (and will fight that breakout even faster than your favorite cleanser!) Placing a warm (not hot) washcloth on your face can naturally draw out the infection and help a pimple make its grand exit that much faster. Face masks, especially those with clay, are a great way to draw out the oil and bacteria that cause breakouts. Reaching for your medicine cabinet in the face of breakouts can also be helpful– eye drops used to calm your eyes are great for reducing redness on your skin. And if you do have a nasty breakout, treating it with lotion infused with Vitamin C can help get rid of any scars that the breakout left behind!

Why You Should Care About Skincare

Sure, you don’t have acne. But maybe you have under eye bags, cellulite, or another skin problem. And perhaps you have flawless skin. Then why should you care about your skincare? Besides just being a beauty and appearances thing, skincare is also crucial for your health! Keeping your skin healthy and clean can lead to no sores, rashes, or acne, and can be less likely to scar after an incident. Having healthy skin means that you also are less likely to see the results of stretch marks during periods of pregnancy or weight gain. Having healthy skin can lead to a beautiful, healthy, noticeable glow, and can be a source of self-confidence!
