The foundation of all life on earth, water is the best drink choice for those sweltering spring afternoons. Water, which makes up around 60% of your body, is calorie-free, inexpensive, and the optimal source of hydration. If you’re still on the fence about ditching your iced teas and lemonades for a tall drink of water, scientists have found that a glass of cold water in the mornings make you feel more alert than a cup of coffee. If you decide to drink water, you should aim for around 64 ounces, or eight cups of water, but should shoot for more if you are sweating or exercising. If you aren’t drinking sports drinks while exercising, but rather just because you enjoy them, consider watering them down or phasing out your sports drink consumption altogether.

Lemonade, iced tea, and even the combination of the two called Arnold Palmer are okay for you, so long as you make them at home! If you grab a bottle of lemonade from the shelves of your local supermarket, though, you may have some problems. Lemonades and iced teas that are made and sold in supermarkets are heavy in sugars, artificial colors, and artificial sweeteners. If you make your tea or lemonade at home, though, you are much better off. With homemade lemonade, you get a healthy dose of vitamin C, and with iced tea; you can get antioxidants and a little bit of caffeine, all for no calories at all!
