The Business of Health: Dole and Marvel, GNC and Rite Aid Make Headlines


The health and wellness business is a growing one—one currently valued at $4.2 trillion. The ever-growing market often relies on partnerships between businesses and organizations, mergers, and business-to-business marketing. Here are just a few of those critical moves that made headlines last week.

Dole and Marvel Partner on Women’s Health

Marvel’s new blockbuster release, aptly named Captain Marvel, features the company’s first female superhero to have her feature-length film. In honor of the occasion, tropical fruit giant Dole is releasing a unique line of bananas and some women’s health recipes too. Next time you head down the produce aisle, look for specially branded Dole bananas, complete with Captain Marvel related stickers. In addition to Dole’s stickers, they’ve also worked with registered dieticians to create a super lineup of healthy recipes targeted toward women. Recipes include a coconut acai bowl, a lemon ginger spring stir-fry, and a “Power Punch” smoothie for bone health.

GNC and Rite Aid Renew Partnership

Since December of 1998, GNC and Rite Aid have partnered to offer customers a new experience– a GNC supplement store “within” a Rite Aid store. Those stores are planning to stay open, as Rite Aid and GNC once again renewed their long-standing partnership through the end of 2022. Around a quarter of all of GNC’s locations (2,200 of the 8,500 GNC locations) are available in Rite Aid stores. After a shakeup of the Rite Aid management and a recent push to get back in line with New York Stock Exchange standards after their stock fell below $1 a share, Rite Aid investors found themselves worried about the new partnership renewal but had their fears dispelled by the renewal.
